Gryffindor countersignaling

I spotted something odd in this popular set of text posts on Tumblr. You’re supposed to reblog the one with your Hogwarts house.

Reblog if you're a Slytherin Reblog if you're Ravenclaw Reblog if you're a HufflepuffReblog if you're a Gryffindor

Slytherin 57K notes; Ravenclaw 47K notes; Hufflepuff 48K notes …. Gryffindor 16K notes. Why so little love for Gryffindor? I find it oddly heartening that the other three houses are fairly evenly distributed, but how are there less than half as many Gryffindors as the least popular of the others?

Maybe this: In the books, Gryffindor is the highest prestige house, and when reading them as kids, most of us tried to envision ourselves as Gryffindors. But after a while that seems like trying too hard. “Like, god, stop trying so hard to be a Gryffindor.” So maybe people counter-signal by sorting themselves into one of the other houses instead? “I’m cool enough that I don’t have to prove I’m cool by saying I’m a Gryffindor.”

‘Cause the other explanation would be that Gryffindors are disproportionately modest, and I think we can all agree that’s VERY UNLIKELY.
